Northern Lake Okeechobee - City of Okeechobee

Navigate around this 360° view atop of Lake Okeechobee’s Herbert Hoover Dike at the City of Okeechobee. Structure S-193, the navigation lock structure seen here, is used for flood control purposes and boating access to the lake. Nearby urban dwellings rely on the Herbert Hoover Dike and control structures like this one for water supply and protection from flooding.

When the photo is first loaded you are looking from the gravel road that gently winds atop the Herbert Hoover Dike at the City of Okeechobee, down the slope of the Dike, which is covered with short, green grasses. A short distance away are longer grasses and shrub-like plants at water’s edge. Beyond these plants are calm, blue waters of Lake Okeechobee, which extend as far as the eye can see.

Navigating to the right, a short, gravel road leads to a fenced-in area which contains Structure S-193, a navigation lock structure. A radio-like tower and some of the S-193 equipment can be seen, as well as a canal and road that lead up to the structure.

Continuing to the right, houses and other urban dwellings can be seen to the left of the gravel road, and the green, grass slope of the Dike can be seen to the right. Just before you complete the full 360-degree turn, Lake Okeechobee waters can be seen beyond the plants at water's edge.

Navigating up with your mouse, you can see a partly cloudy blue sky. Navigating down, you see the South Florida Information Access (SOFIA) web site logo, which is linked to the SOFIA main page (http://sofia.usgs.gov).
