Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary - Cypress Swamp

(This photo is a 360-degree IPIX interactive image, which allows you to navigate with your mouse: up, down, right and left, in order to see the entire surrounding landscape.)

Navigate around this 360° view of the elevated boardwalk of the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary surrounded by cypress swamp. Cypress trees commonly have buttressed bases and cypress "knees" that protrude out of the water. The knees are thought to aid the roots by providing oxygen to the often-waterlogged cypress.

When the photo is first loaded you are looking down a curved section of Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary’s elevated wooden boardwalk. Cypress trees abut the boardwalk on both sides.

Navigating to the right, cypress trees and ferns grow in standing swamp waters. Continuing to the right, you see the boardwalk curving through more of the swamp vegetation.

As you continue the 360-degree turn to the image’s starting point, buttressed bases of the cypress trees and lush fern understory are readily seen.

Navigating up with your mouse, you can see a blue, partly cloudy sky through the tall cypress canopy. Navigating down, you see the South Florida Information Access (SOFIA) web site logo, which is linked to the SOFIA main page (http://sofia.usgs.gov).
